5 DO'S AND ONE BIG DON'T!

Search engines work on the "most popular girl in school" method of ranking. Ask any kid in a school who is the most popular girl and they'll give you the answer!

The general search engines operate the same way. They want to give their users the best, most relevant links to websites so they keep coming back. In order to decide which sites are most relevant for the search term entered, they ask "Which sites are most popular?" This is determined by looking at how many other sites your web site is linked to. The search engines figure if other quality sites think you are link worthy then you must be good!

Search engines like popularity!

If you want to be taken seriously by the search engines you will need some quality incoming links. It is important to note that the sheer number of incoming links is not as important as the quality of the sites that are doing the linking. All links are not created equal!

Here are the Do's and one big Don't:

DO…

Be link worthy. Great content will make others want to have your link!

Look for the low hanging fruit. Distributors and supply companies that carry your product are perfect prospects. Ask them if you could link to their site.

Look for sites that would complement your customer base and exchange links with them. For example, if you sell the custom printed plastic shopping bags that are used at trade shows, look for a popular site that is selling trade show displays and ask if you can exchange links.

Create a free tool, spec sheet or write an article that will be attractive to other companies in your industry. These are items that other sites like to have as additional content.

Get links in quality, respected directories, associations and vertical sites. The most obvious mention here of course is ThomasNet. Your ThomasNet program gets your site linked to the most popular industrial site on the web! Your ThomasNet links are high quality links. ThomasNet's editorial dept. makes sure it has rich, relevant and easy to search content. This is attractive to the search engines. Also, keep an eye out for other industry specific sites. Seek them out and add your link.

DON'T...

Do Not, Do Not, Do Not
link to irrelevant sites or sites you should not be associated with. If you hear from a company that says they can quickly get your site linked to hundreds of other sites... run away!

These are called link farms and the major search engines consider this SPAM and you could find yourself with no links at all. If you end up in Google sandbox it could take you many months to get out. So just don't do it!

... you could find yourself with no links at all!

HOW POPULAR ARE YOU?

Back links are not the only component to good search engine optimization but it is an important one. With the current news about Google's personalized search results it will be more important than ever to have your site linked to popular, content rich, relevant sites. So be the most successful kid in the class and work those back links!
